His wife Fredi is a powerhouse is her own right, having co-founded Summer Search Boston, an organization taking on the challenge of helping low-income high school youth-100% of their students have graduated high school and 94% have gone on to college. He shares his insights, lessons-learned and best practices in Giving to Getting, a book he co-authored that details an entrepreneurial approach to philanthropy. Along the way, he’s served on the boards of countless national non-profit organizations and as the president of a multi-billion-dollar private investment partnership. That was just one of many successful campaigns he’s run for environmental, cultural, arts and educational causes. He conducted the first-ever HBS capital campaign, which came in 20% over its hardly-modest $500 million goal. However, he may be best known for having raised millions upon millions of dollars not only for Harvard but also for the various nonprofit organizations he has served. Having earned his MBA and Doctoral degrees at Harvard Business School, he built the school’s entrepreneurial management program, leveraging experience gained through involvement with a number of public and privately held companies and during the last 35 years in various leadership positions at Harvard. Crunchy red fruits, white pepper and a whiff of fresh herbs on the palate juxtapose perfectly with the wines medium body, fresh acidity and fine tannic structure.Forbes Magazine called him a “$1 billion fund-raiser,” an apt moniker for Howard Stevenson, Sarofim-Rock Baker Professor Emeritus and former Senior Associate Dean at Harvard Business School, Director of Publishing and Chair of the board for Harvard Business Publishing Company and Vice-Provost of Harvard University. Graceful and elegant are two apt descriptors for Fredi Torres’ "Classic" Priorat. The cooler and rainier climate lends itself to wine that is playful, with more fruit, or as Fredi put it "no shiki-miki." Mark and Fredi also farm grapes in the surrounding Montsant. What they are doing there is magical, pulling off the unusual feat of a Priorat that is easy-drinking as soon as you open the bottle, but will still hold up with age. With the inability to utilize any machinery, everything is done by hand and animals. The rocky soil and steep vineyards, with elevations between 300 to 600 meters, demand careful thoughtful farming. In 2013, Fredi and his friend and business partner Mark Lecha began Lectores Vini with 6 hectares in the mystical Priorat. Single-mindedly focused on his goal of making amazing wine. He's a man who "hates weekends," sleeps 4-5 hours a night and has no television. Moving from DJ'ing nightclubs to shoveling compost seemed daunting but Fredi has never been afraid of hard work. After phoning René Barbier over and over with no success, Torres just showed up on Barbier's doorstep and began his career in winemaking. One bottle of Clos Mogador 1998 changed all that. There he worked for Nike, studied audio engineering and had a successful career as a house DJ. Born in Galicia, Fredi spent most of his young life in Switzerland. It's pretty clear Fredi Torres does things his own way. Grapes: Mostly Garnacha with Carinena, Syrah, Macabeo
